Byzantine Icon Workshop During the week of February 2, 2004 members of the Denver Ukrainian community participated in an intensive six day Icon Writing workshop, sponsored by the Pope John Paul II Center. The workshop, hosted by Vladislav and Dimitri Andreyev, of the Prosopon School of Iconology, was held at the St. John Vianney Seminary in Denver.
The sacred art of Iconography is also known as "visual Theology" because it can be read and understood by all believers, including the illiterate. It is both narrative and instructive and addresses not only our vision, but also our emotions and experiences. The manifestation of the deeper meaning represented by the holy icon requires from its observer an inner enlightenment. The holy icon provides this enlightenment and allows us to penetrate its hidden meaning.
Workshop Paricipants Jerry Montoya and Bohdan Makolondra Participants
learned the technical as well as religious aspects of Icon Writing,
and
each wrote individual icons. Those attending from the Denver Ukrainian
community were Jerry Montoya, Bohdan Makolondra, and James Dowd. |
